Chinese New Year Movies 2015

When I was a teenager, I loved Chinese New Year. Beside getting the red envelope and savoring plenty of good foods, I especially enjoyed time spending with friends, hopping from one house to another, and going to the cinema for Chinese New Year movies.

This must be an unique tradition in the Chinese movie markets I guess, as I don't think they do the same thing during Christmas or Deepavali. The movies do not necessary linked to anything CNY, but normally at the end of the film, the actors and actress would reappear on the screen and express their blessing to the audiences.

There are 8 movies on the list during CNY this year. My favorite is Triumps in The Skies. I watched this drama series years back and I really love Francis Ng (吴镇宇).

If I were in Malaysia, I would probably go watch From Vegas to Macau II since it is starring by Chow Yun-Fat.

Lucky Star 2015, a typical CNY theme movie (Hong Kong), I would go for it if I long for good laugh.

The King of Mahjong is directed by a Malaysian, with a Singaporean actor pairing with some Hong Kong stars. I would go to support the Malaysian/Singaporean film industry. Even though the market is limited, Malaysian/Singaporean films are blooming, they have joined the CNY market a while back.

Another CNY theme movie with a Singaporean actor.

Franckly I don't like Jackie Chan's movie, too much actions, I think it is more appealing to the men audiences. His films are always the big hit during CNY.

Sandra Ng becomes a man? Worth watching. 12 Golden Ducks.

Another Hong Kong theme CNY movie.

These firms are not aired in France, I would rely on the internet if I want to watch them. How about you? Have you watched at least one CNY movie since the first day of CNY?

Reminiscing Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

Aelig was with her grandparents so we were having our child-free week again. Hubby was outstation during the day and after picking him up at the train station in the evening, we went straight to our favorite Thai restaurant. When he sat down, he told me: "You know what I want to do now? Go Alama Dratthouse."

This was not the first time he mentioned about this. Back in Austin, we went a lot to cinema and one of our favorites was Alama Drafthouse. It is a cinema combining restaurant + cinema features. So, while waiting for the movie to start, he would order his burger or pizza and me chicken wings. We would enjoy the movie while sipping a beer or savoring a dessert. I remembered we had a movie marathon: Kill Bill 1 & 2. Yeah, eating while watching all those blood splashing...

Watching movie has long been hubby's hobby. In Austin, on average, he went to movie theater once a week. It helped that we had 3 cinemas nearly and one was within 5 minutes walking distance. If we didn't go on Saturday usually it would only costed $5. I watched the first French movie in my life there: Emélie Paulain. So, when we didn't know what to eat and what to do, we would go to Alamo Drafthouse.

Those were the days...

Michelle Yeoh in France

I meant to blog about this last Saturday but didn't get a chance. Aelig has been refusing to go to bed. She would climb out from her crib each time we put her to sleep. She only got to bed passed 11pm. By the time she dozed off I was exhausted.

Anyway, Michelle Yeoh appeared on the 8pm news last Saturday to talk about her new movie "The Lady", directed by Luc Besson (French). She played as Aung San Suu Kyi, the heroine of Myanmar.

I was so excited to see her on 8pm News' interview. She would be the first Malaysian born star ever invited to this interview, if not mistaken. French news allocate some times talking about new released movies, most of the time featuring interviews on French movie directors, actresses and actors. A lot of A list Hollywood movie stars are on the list too, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Hopefully more Malaysian - Asian born movies and stars would be introduced to the French audiences.

The Battle of Red Cliff: bad chose of main charactors

No!!! How could John Woo let Takeshi Kaneshiro (Jing Cheng Woo) played the role of Zhu Ge Liang, the most honorable strategist in the ancient Chinese history? This is definitely a bad decision! He has always played roles as handsome guy or fighter, but no way being a strategist. If I were the director, I would reverse the role between Tony Leong (Zhou Yu) and him.

Red Cliff is one of the famous battles in the Three Kingdom history. I read it long time ago when I had to sit for the form six Chinese paper. A friend lent me the whole set of VCR, a very long winded series but it helped me to score well in the exam. At that time Chinese actors were chosen not based on their look but their acting skills. The guy who played Zhu Ge Liang was so good that the first impression I have about him was that he is a wise man. Takeshi Kaneshiro certainly couldn't give me this impression.

What is done is done. I read that Tony Leung was supposed to play this role but he gave up due to some health issues. Later he came back and picked up the role of Zhou Yu, which was supposed to be played by Chow Yun Fat. Tony Leung's performance was ok, but I couldn't help but notice that he was actually speaking in Cantonese and his voice got dubbed by someone else. The sound matching for Takashi was off too despite him speaking fluently Mandarin. Chang Chen's Taiwan Mandarin was odd compared to a bunch of mainland Chinese speaker.

The famous Taiwanese model Lin Chi-Ling was playing as Tony Leung's wife. Hubby was quite disturbed by her baby voice but overall this is just another vase character in a male dominated movie. Despite being the most expensive Chinese movie ever made ($80 million), I prefer Hero than Red Cliff.

Movie: Into the Wild

Excellent movie. Directed by Sean Penn.

The story is about a guy ventured into Alaska from West Virginia, living in the wild without any outside world interruption. At the end of the journey, he discovered that:

"Happiness is only real when it's shared".

Do you agree with him?

I would rephrase the sentence:

"Happiness is amplified when shared".

Lust and Caution

Have you guys watched this film? I like it a lot!

Despite the fact that the old man sitting beside me was snoring at the first 10 minutes of the movie, I was fascinated by the performance of Tony Leung, one of my favorite actors. France is quite open in terms of film standard, so I got to see all the sex scenes, the highlight of the film. I heard that those in Malaysia, Singapore and China don't even get to watch Tony Leung's butt or Tan Wei's breast. :-)

The cinema was almost full. This theater has a lot of Asian movies, and they have one thing in comment: either it has a lot of sex scene, or violence, or extremely weird movie. It has been a long time I haven't seen a normal Hong Kong movie, like those we got to see in Malaysia.

Movie: American Gangster

Source

When you are with your partner how do you get the consensus to watch a movie? As for us, hubby will always go to check on the rating in IMDB.com. This time, he played a trick. He knew that I like cartoon and there is one coming out: The fog and the kid. He hid this cartoon and instead told me that there were two good movies, American Gangster or another police movie, both sounded "guy"'s movie to me. At the end we both agreed to try out American Gangster since it has very good review.

It turned out to be a very nice movie. It is about a black man overtaking the Italian mafia in the drug business in Harlem in the 70's. What I like was that at the end, this black man cooperated with the police and the result was shocking:
- 3/4 of the police enforcement took bribe from mafia
- 30 of his family members went to jail

If you have chance, go see this movie.

Ratatouille - The rat chef

We went to see Walt Disney cartoon "Ratatouille" and it was excellent!

The whole story took place in Paris and it was charming to see the Eiffel Tower, under the eyes of the rat!

Yes, this cartoon is about everyone can cook, including this cute rat.

It's amazing, hubby was making this French dish "Ratatouille", then 2 days later he proposed to go see a movie "Ratatouille". Rat is the same word as in French, so this title matches completely: A rat who cook the famous French dish Ratatouille.

I'm so glad I discovered this dish as each week we got so much zucchinis from the farmer, this is a good dish to finish all of them haha.

Have you guys seen this movie? How do you like it?

SOLD

Read a book again about unfortunate woman having their unfortunate life in the middle east.

Zana Muhsen and Nadia Muhsen are two British girls, went to a suppose vacation in Yemen, their father's home country, just to realise that they were SOLD by their father to his friends and forced married to his friends'sons. Then it begun their miserable life in the country side of Yemen. After several years, Zana has one son and Nadia has one son one daughter. They managed to contact their mother, who didn't know of their situation, and came to rescue them by involving the medias. Eventually Zana was able to go back to English, with the condition giving up her son and left him with Nadia, who will wait for the rescue after her sister went back to English. But until today, Nadia is still living in Yemen. All these are written in the book "SOLD", and Zana wrote another book "The promise to Nadia" years later.

The controversy is that the medias tried to contact and interview Nadia, who said she has a happy life with her husband and children in Yemen. She is sueing her sister for publishing the second book and telling lies about her life in Yemen. She said that she knew from the beginning that she was going to get married in Yemen and live there. She would like to visit English one day, but not now.

All these really confused me. While Zana is trying to get her sister Nadia out, Nadia refuses to go home, saying that she has all the independence to go anyway and love her life in Yemen. I don't know who is telling lies, and no matter what the damage is done: women's life in middle east is horrible.

Muguet

So, I worked from 6.45am to 12.30pm yesterday, and today from 6.45am to 6.30pm.

Collecting the muguet is an easy job in the sense that it doesn't require high IQ, but physically it can be exhausting. We are not allowed to sit down, so the whole day bending the body collecting the 5-6 inch flowers is tiresome. Also, it can be quite dangerous as the muguet is covered by glasses. On the first day already, I cut my hand, quick backly. The alley between the row of flowers are very tiny, and I had the chance having a fat lady working back against back. So when she turned, she pushed me forward and I pushed into the glasses and the glass broke.

Anyway, right now most of the French supervisors know me. I don't know whether she keep noticing me or what, they seem to appreciate my work attitide so they "promoted" me to work in the packaging factory. They selected only 5 of us. I'm so glad bcos I can't stand anymore bending down picking muguet and it's leaves. However this "promotion" seems to be temporiraly, tomorrow I will be out picking again I think. :-(

Hopefully by the time I come home tomorrow, the presidental election result will be out. I don't support any candidates in particular, but anybody who can stimulate the sluggish economy is welcome.

Not Without My Daughter

I finished this book yesterday night, using only 2 days, in French version (Jamais sans ma fille). It's a book written by Betty Mahmoody. It describes how an American woman, Betty, who married an Iranian, went to Iran with her husband and daughter for a 2 weeks vacation, later realised that she was keeping hostage and might never leave Iran. Over 18 months in Iran, she was planning on her plan to escape with her daughter, in which she succeeded by crossing illegally to Turkey, and returned to US from there.

I have a lot of doubts about certain things she decribed about Iran. But the most unbelievable fact is that the Swiss Embassy, representing also USA, or even the US government, didn't manage to help her returning to her own country from Iran. She was not being kept by any terrorist organization, but by her husband. The family managed to call her and send letters to her, so they know where she lived. I remember a teenager American was littering in Singapore, and the Clinton government was making a fuss about the punishment imposed by the Singaporean government to him. And when their citizen was kept under hostage, they could do nothing about it?

Anyway, this book led me to understand how crazy a muslim country can be. I'm so glad that Malaysia is not like that. We have like 55% muslim population, already the constitutions are there to ensure respecting each other's religion and culture. The muslim population in Malaysia do not force the non-muslim to cover themselves like them. The Islamic laws do not apply to non-muslim. In fact, a lot of us non-muslim like to wear the Malay clothes. The school uniform for muslim and non-muslim are different, but you can see the non-muslim wearing the muslim uniform, by choice, but without the veil. In certain occasion we are asked to wear the Malay traditional clothes, like when meeting the Sultan or the royal family or during public Universities' commencemence. But in all of these occasions, a veil to cover the hairs is not imposed.

We were laughing and even enjoying some of the jokes the Islamic party leaders said. From time to time, these leaders want to execute Islamic rules to our daily life, but we always treat them as jokes. For example, one of the leader mentioned that employers should hire ugly women Vs the beautiful one as the later will be taken care of by their husbands. Then one suggested to change the Malaysian Airlines' stewardess' uniform, as sometime the male passengers accidentally see their breasts and this leads to sexual desire which will result in girls being rapped once these passengers touch down in somewhere. Ever time these kind of comments are published, we doubted these leaders are well equipped with enough intelligence in this rich Malaysian culture.

I hope Malaysia will never go under these stupid fundamentalists.

Curse of the Golden Flower

We went to watch this movie during the 3 days spring film festival. We paid 3.50 euros per person instead of 9 euros.

Overall it was a good movie, if you like "Hero", as it has the same big scenes using colourful creatures. I heard that they didn't use the digital technology to manage the film, all the scenes are real made.

What I can't stand is this: I don't think the Chinese during the Tang dynasty wear this kind of sexy dress? I have not awared in the Chinese history that servants in the palace are showing off their boobs? I thought this only happen in the European countries.

The Departed

We went to watch "The Departed" tonight. It's a movie produced by Brad Pitt. He bought the right to reproduce this movie in English, as it's origin is in Cantonese called "Internal Affairs".

Here is the English version played by Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Here is the Cantonese version played by Andy Lau and Tony Leung.

I just want to say, that Andy Lau and Tony Leung look a lot more handsome. Just my personal opinion.

Tell No One (Ne le dis à personne)

Tell No One is a book written by Harlan Coben. It's now out in the cinema in France. Weirdly, they made it in France and the people speak in French. Harlan Coben even appear in one of the scene.

It's a story about a couple who knew each other since childhood. Each year they go to a lake to celebrate their "kissing"anniversary. One year, they went again to the lake, but the wife was killed. The husband was basically destroyed from then on.

8 years later, the husband received an email, where it provided a link. He opened it and saw his wife! He started looking in the possibility that his wife is still alive. That's where the story started to get very exciting.

I wonder whether this movie will be shown in US.

French comedy: Samantha Oups

I seldom watch French TV program but this one I usually don't want to miss because it's so funny and hilarious! It's shown on 7.50pm from Mon to Fri, only 10 minutes before the 8pm news start.

Basically is about two guys who play as a blond and a brune. They are best friend to each other. The blond is called Samantha, and the brune is called Chantal.

On one of the episod, Samantha was in the kitchen, and she saw the microwave's time moving and bipping. She thought it was a bomb, and hesitated so much for the next move. At around 8 seconds left, she decided to pull the microwave from the plug and throw it towards the window. She passedby Chantal and bumped into her. Chantal asked why she threw away her microwave. Samantha replied that one day Chantal will thanks her for shaving Chantal's life. As usual, Chantal showed her "don't know what to do with her"expression.

You can find the extract of some of the episods here:
